From Purpose to Passion: Meet the Curator Behind September Collective

My journey began with a simple realization: finding modern African decor locally was difficult. Turning to international retailers seemed like the only option, but it came with significant expenses, unexpected fees, and long wait times. This experience made me question—why wasn’t high-quality, modern African home decor more accessible to Canadians?

Guided by a philosophy of curating timeless, high-quality pieces, I set out to bridge the gap. September Collective is my response—a brand offering heritage-inspired modern African home decor and art, available year-round.

Too often, the artistry of our culture is celebrated only during specific moments. I wanted to create a space where the richness of African culture—both from the continent and the African Diaspora—is represented and appreciated every day of the year.

"After many years in corporate roles, I decided to take a leap of faith to pursue a dream that had long been close to my heart: owning a business that would not only fulfill my creative passion but also make a meaningful impact within my community." - Leslie

Why the name September Collective?

The month of September has always symbolized renewal, transition, and growth for me. It’s a time to refresh ideas, embrace new opportunities, and align life with what truly matters. Spiritually, it marked a moment of recalibration—seeking balance and infusing my work with purpose and authenticity.

Just as September signals beginnings, it is also the start of the fashion year, setting the tone for trends and creative expression, home decor and art follow a similar rhythm. Fashion influences the way we curate our living spaces, from colour palettes to textures and patterns that reflect evolving tastes. The artistry found in textiles, design, and craftsmanship seamlessly extends beyond wardrobes and into our homes, shaping the way we express identity and culture. September, in many ways, is a starting point—a moment to reimagine spaces with fresh perspectives, blending heritage with modernity in the same way fashion does each season.

The “Collective” in September Collective reflects the essence of what this brand represents: a gathering of artisans, thoughtful design, cultural heritage, and creative energy. It’s a harmonious blend of elements brought together to celebrate the beauty of modern artistry.

Today, September Collective is a reflection of my values, my vision, and my commitment to celebrating the stories, artistry, and heritage of Africa and the African Disapora. It’s more than a business; it’s a way to help others transform their homes into spaces that tell their unique stories—one timeless piece at a time.

Bringing African Artistry into Modern Living

Behind the Scenes - Learn how we’re bringing together timeless traditions and modern style to create a unique, powerful story.

September Collective was born out of a desire to redefine Canadian home decor—to one that blends heritage with modern design and storytelling with craftsmanship. Frustrated by the limited availability of high-quality, Heritage Inspired Modern African Home Decor in Canada, I set out to create an accessible, premium e-commerce destination where people could find curated pieces that reflect cultural richness and personal storytelling.

Every piece in our collection is more than just decor—it’s a narrative woven through time, tradition, and artistry. I source high-end, handcrafted products from artisans across Africa and the African Diaspora, ensuring that each item embodies authenticity, sustainability, and craftsmanship. From the intricate basketry of the Bolgatanga region in Ghana, to the beautifully designed textiles of South Africa, to modern artistry within the African Diaspora, and contemporary furniture carved from recycled wood sourced through reforestation initiatives, every piece carries the essence of its origins. We have many criteria for the artistry we purchase with handmade, eco-friendly, and ethically made items taking precedence as we focus on both artistry and sustainability.

At the heart of September Collective is our logo, a visual representation of community, relationships, and heritage. Inspired by traditional African mud cloth, the three parallel lines symbolize balance, energy, and continuity, mirroring the harmony between past, present, and future. These lines are more than just a design—they represent stability, growth, and the deep connections between generations. Just as artisans use symbols in mud cloth to tell stories, the square pattern of the logo reflects the essence of September Collective—bringing meaningful, connected design into homes, uniting people with their heritage, and celebrating the collective strength of communities through storytelling.

Through September Collective, I invite you to bring these stories into your home—to honour tradition, embrace artistry, and create a space that reflects your authentic self.
