Founder & Multi-disciplinary Creative

BONOLO CHEPAPE

As the founder and designer of Lulasclan, I’ve always seen design in a non-singular form. My love for different areas of design, much like my love for different cultures, and experimentation of textile designs, has forged a platform that allows me to work across disciplines and across teams, bringing my passions together whilst highlighting my core, creating textile designs that are packed with meaning, purpose and intention, and rooted in an African Contemporary style of design that reminds me of Home.

My journey of starting Lulasclan was about creating pieces for my home, pieces that I would wake up to, and pieces that would welcome me back home after a long day, giving me a feeling of home, of inspiration and warmth.

Founded in 2016, what started as a small scatter cushion business, has evolved into a Textile & Product Design Studio, home to the South African Textile artist and designer Bobolo Chepape, who’s story starts with a love for patterns, art and design, cultivated and nurtured in a small dusty mining town of Rustenburg, North West, South Africa.

Anna Chepape (Mother) & Tshupi Letsie (Aunt) are the matriarchs of the Chepape Clan who have helped and contributed in the building and support of the brand. The self-taught seamstresses had a natural appetite for entrepreneurship, jumped on board when the idea of Lulasclan was born.

The Home-ware and Textile Design Studio, designs and manufactures their textile designs & products in Cape Town and Rustenburg, infusing cross-cultural elements, to create a distinct African contemporary style that celebrates culture and heritage.

The brand believes in the beauty that exists in Africa and its cultures, and is driven to finding ways to preserve it by documenting and sharing it’s beauty.

The collections features bold and colourful African Contemporary textile shapes and designs, with motifs explored from the African ceramics, Totemism, mud houses, and childhood memories of home and a beautiful homage to textile weaving techniques in traditional African tapestries.

The designs are embodied in luxurious velvet fabrics, with gold details, and a careful attention to craftsmanship in its making.

Designed & locally sourced Craftsmanship

Our process involves sourcing quality base fabrics from local fabric suppliers and using digital printing technology that use eco-solvent inks to transfer our designs.

Our products are hand made and produced with the help of local independent seamstresses all sourced based on their area of speciality and skill, to bring craftsmanship and design visions together in a seamless piece that everyone can be proud of.
